Believed to be over 1,000 years old, the Mokka varietal is distinguished by its unusually small screen size and odd bean shape. Scarcely grown outside of its place of origin in Yemen due to its low yield and difficult harvesting, the varietal grows beautifully at Kaanapali Estate, with the low altitude and volcanic soil lending themselves to the phosphoric-forward cup profile that secured it’s place as the “Best of Hawaii.”

Kaanapali Estate, located on the West coast of Maui, downslope from the Pu’u Kukui Forest Reserve, was originally planted as a sugar plantation in 1860. The owners diversified the farm into coffee in 1988 and conducted studies to determine which varieties produced the most ono (delicious) cup qualities at this lower altitude. As a result of these tests, Kaanapali Estate now grows four main varietals: Red Catuai, Yellow Caturra, Typica, and Mokka.
